ABOUT LI Po...
"The Li Po bar is still in operation and pretty much the same now as it
was when Kerouac, Snyder, Lamantia, Whalen and Ginsberg frequented it.
Inside, a large Buddha still presides over the joint. Perhaps the poets were
drawn by the bar's namesake. Li Po, one of China's greatest poets, lived in
the eighth century in Szechwan province and, like the beats, had a taste for
wine, poetry and adventure." -- From "The Beat Generation In San Francisco,
A Literary Tour," Published by City Lights, 2003.

Frommer's Review...
"A dim, divey, slightly spooky Chinese bar that was once an opium den,
Li Po's alluring character stems from its mishmash clutter of dusty Asian
furnishings and mementos, including an unbelievably huge ancient rice-paper
lantern hanging from the ceiling and a glittery golden shrine to Buddha
behind the bar. The bartenders love to creep out patrons with tales of opium
junkies haunting the joint."

San Francisco Chronicle Review...
"Classic local haunt that, with its David Lynch-like ambience, has
become famous with the tourists. The dark, red room in the back is the place
to perch yourself and watch the night's characters go by."
